Symptoms of Worn Shock Absorbers

 • September 29, 2025

The shocks and struts are some of the critical components in the suspension, absorbing energy from road impact. As these parts take the brunt of the abuse for everyday driving, it’s not uncommon for them to wear down over time and require replacement. Worn-out shocks and struts can cause symptoms such as a squeaking noise when going over bumps and decreased handling performance, which can quickly become a major safety issue if left unaddressed.

Nose Dive When Braking

If your vehicle feels like the front end consistently dips toward the ground when you hit the brakes, this is called a nose-dive and can indicate potential worn shocks and struts. It can cause an increase in stopping distance, making driving conditions potentially dangerous.

Bouncy Ride

Bouncing excessively when driving and hitting a bump can be a signal that your vehicle’s shocks and struts aren’t working properly. When your shocks and struts aren’t functioning, your vehicle is supposed to settle when hitting a bump; instead, the shocks and struts can absorb the full road impacts and soften the bump.

Vehicle Rolls or Sways When Cornering

If you notice your vehicle swaying or rolling when making a turn, it can be unsettling because it can feel like you aren’t in control of your car. As shocks wear, they can lose their ability to control the rate of weight transfer when going around corners.

Uneven Tire Wear

When your vehicle’s shocks and struts are worn out, the car may start bouncing, causing a reduction in overall stability. This bouncing can also cause accelerated tire wear. It’s crucial to get your vehicle serviced by a professional as soon as you can to prevent potential damage.

Rear Squat During Acceleration –

Shocks and struts stabilize suspension movement when accelerating. When your shocks and struts are going bad, the rear of your vehicle can squat excessively when you hit the gas pedal. The vehicle’s momentum is transferred to the rear, which causes the front end to rise.

Vibration In the Steering Wheel

Commonly, if you’re driving over a bumpy road, it’s normal to experience a little vibration, but in some cases, vibrations can be a sign of bad shocks or struts. If you experience similar vibrations when driving on smooth roads, your shocks, struts, or steering stabilizer may be damaged or worn.

Leaking Fluid On Exterior of Shocks/Struts

Excessive hydraulic fluid leaking from your shocks or struts may be a sign that they’re wearing out. If the seals fail, then the fluid that is essential to the proper function of your shocks and struts is escaping.
